A note on language. This page is published in English only for the time being. A Nepali translation is being prepared; until it is published, the English text is the operative one. If anything here is unclear, please write to us and we will explain it in Nepali.

Who this policy is from

Shaksham Law Associates is a law firm at Anamnagar, Kathmandu, Nepal. This policy covers slawnepal.com and the enquiries that reach us through it. It does not cover the separate professional duty of confidentiality we owe to clients, which is stricter than anything set out below and which continues after a matter closes.

What we actually collect

We have kept this site deliberately simple, and we would rather describe what it really does than recite a list of practices we do not follow.

• What you send us. The consultation booking form, the pro bono request form and the careers form collect the details you type into them: your name, email address, telephone number, the description of your matter, and any documents you attach. These forms open your own email programme with the message composed and addressed to us. Nothing is submitted to a server on this website, and nothing is stored here. What we receive is an ordinary email, held in our firm mailbox.
• What your browser keeps. Your choice of language and your accessibility settings are saved in your own browser's local storage so the site does not forget them between pages. Those values stay on your device. They are not transmitted to us and we cannot read them.
• What third parties see. The map on the contact page is embedded from Google Maps, and our typefaces are served by Google Fonts. Loading either means your browser contacts Google directly, and Google may record that request under its own privacy terms, which we do not control. If you would rather not load them, most browsers and content blockers can prevent it; the rest of the site works without them.
• Server logs. Whoever hosts this site keeps standard access logs, as every web server does. We do not use those logs to build a profile of you.

We run no analytics package, no advertising pixels and no tracking cookies of our own. If that changes, we will say so on this page before it takes effect.

Why we hold it

We use what you send us to answer you, to work out whether we are able to act for you, to run the conflict checks that professional practice requires, and, if you become a client, to carry out the work. We use applications sent to careers@slawnepal.com only to assess candidates. We do not sell information, and we do not pass it to anyone for marketing.

Before you send us anything confidential

Please read this paragraph carefully. Sending us an enquiry does not by itself make you a client of this firm and does not, on its own, create a lawyer–client relationship. Until we have confirmed in writing that we are acting for you, material you send may not attract the protection that communications with your own lawyer would. Email is also not a secure medium. For anything sensitive, please call us on +977 984 3625565 and arrange a meeting instead of writing it out.

Who else sees it

Information you send is seen by the advocates and staff of this firm who need it for your matter. Beyond that, we disclose it only where we are required to by law or by an order of a court or regulator, where we instruct another professional on your matter with your knowledge, or where it is necessary to establish or defend a legal claim. Our email is hosted by a third-party provider, which necessarily processes messages in transit and at rest.

How long we keep it

Client files are retained for as long as professional and statutory obligations require, and often longer where a matter may be reopened. Enquiries that do not become instructions are kept for a reasonable period and then deleted. Unsuccessful job applications are kept for up to a year in case something suitable comes up, unless you ask us to remove them sooner.

Keeping it safe

We take reasonable and practical measures to protect the information we hold, including access controls on our systems and physical security at the office. No system is perfectly secure, and we do not claim otherwise; what we can say is that we do not collect more than we need, and that confidential client material is not stored on this website.

Your rights

Chapter 10 of the Privacy Act, 2075 (2018) gives you rights over personal information held about you, including the right to see it and to have it corrected. Write to info@slawnepal.com and we will deal with your request. Where the information forms part of a client file or is subject to professional privilege or a legal obligation, there are limits on what we can release, and we will explain those to you if they apply.

Children

This website is not directed at people under 18, and we do not knowingly collect their information through it. Where a matter concerns a minor, we take instructions in the ordinary way through a parent or guardian.

Changes

We may revise this policy from time to time. The revised version takes effect when it is posted here, and the date at the top of the page will tell you when that was.
